Spanking new watercolour pencils!

Yesterday, while waiting for me to finish with getting my hair done, my husband found me a box of watercolour pencils :)

He knew I wanted one, but hadn't found it yet, and so when he found it - and going at a discounted price - he bought it for me!

I couldn't wait to try them out, and I've put up my efforts here! They're not as easy as the experts make out on You Tube, but they weren't as hard as working with actual watercolours. I love watercolours, and I'm hoping that this will give me a foretaste for working with water, and will lead me to watercolours one day.

A clumbsy, I think. And lot's of room for improvement. But, it's fun, so it's all good!

Here's the new box - ready with a sharpener and a round brush

A try-out of three of my favourites: a rosebud, some poppies, and a tulip

I found some old sketches, and coloured a black-eyed susan, too ;)

  1. You got the watercolor pencils! Excellent :D

I was just thinking yesterday about buying a box today, but I wasn't sure.

    Now I'm definitely getting one. I just hope I don't do the "I can't, I can't, I can't" dance with them :P

I still haven't opened the new set of brushes and the sketchpad I bought almost two weeks ago because I'm afraid of ruining them. Fear is my biggest enemy when it comes to art, but I'm fighting it... slowly, but I'm trying.

Your sketches are very good :)

  2. Hahahah! Oh Cass, you don't know how what you said resonates with me!!! I am the very same way! :)

I do that dance whenever I get anything new! It will sit pretty on my shelf and I won't use it for fear of ruining it. And, I don't just do that with my art stuff - where the dance is laced with the fear that I will suck-bigtime at what I paint - but also with a new foundation, or lipstick; even with a new blouse!!! Hahahah!! So, that 'I can't, I can't, I can't' dance you speak of: well, for me, it now has a name - thanks to you! Hahahah!

The reason I actually used the pencils is because my husband asked if I was going to paint something with them 'today'. And so, for him, I did what I'd not normally do! ;)

But, they are really fun, Cass! You must try them. Today, I'm going to make a colour swatch of them, so that I'll know what the colours are like when watered. The rosebud above has a blue background. But, when I added water to the coloured background, it almost disappeared. When it dried it was gone! Hahahahah!

So, there's lots to learn, and it's quite fun. It's so completely different from what I've done before :)

  3. Well, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who knows "The Dance" :P

I bought the pencils on Monday, a box of 36 of them, also Faber Castell. I also bought watercolor paper but I haven't used them yet. I'm scared!

You know, it was the only good thing on Monday, because when I got to school there was no one there! The day was horrible, rainy and cold so everyone stayed home, even the teacher (the principal told him to). We were only two students in the whole school.

Then when I had to go home there was a HUGE storm and one of the buses wouldn't come near my house because the whole area was flooded so I had to walk a loooong way with water up to my knees, all soaking wet, my drawings, my backpack, everything was ruined! I was so mad!

But I had the watercolor pencils so at least that was worth it. I just have to gather the courage to use them now :P

  4. Oh, that sounds like a hellish day, Cass! Yes, at least you had one little thing to make you warm, eh?

So, have you used them yet? Why don't you give it a start and do what I am planning to do: make the swatch of colours? It's not as daunting as actually doing a painting of something, no? ;)

I had meant to do that today, but my husband and I went to see the latest Harry Potter movie, and we only just got home! I am a BIG fan of the books, and the movies, and I just had to see this last one :)

Cass, I'd love it if you wrote me. My e-mail address is on my profile page, but I can give it to you here as well, as it's surely no big secret! Hahahah!

I'm retired, and at home all day, so I'll be sure to reply if you do. Sometimes, writing to someone you've never met can be good for the soul. It's almost like writing to yourself, except that there'll be a reply!! Hehehe!

I had a friend like that. But, early this year, I lost this cyber-friend of mine. We'd never met, but we'd become good friends over about a year or so. He was 74. He died in an accident in March, and I still miss him. If you look at some of my earlier posts, you'll see his encouraging comments to me whenever I posted my (sometimes frighteningly ugly) work. He was 'Hopscotch'/Louis, and a really wonderful man.

So, if you need someone to listen, you know where to find me :)
